Recently in the world of After Effects, there’s been continued discussion of mograph as a tween, counterparts, OS requirements for upcoming Creative Cloud revisions, renaming tools, expressions, motion graphics templates, weekly tips and more. Eran Stern apparently has a new podcast of sorts, After Effects Weekly, on Lynda-LinkedIn. Tune in each Friday for a new tip, and “learn how to reset tools, control animations, create effects, control layers, fix issues, and integrate with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Cinema 4D.”  It seems to be behind the paywall though.

Here’s another round of news on Adobe After Effects! Yes, you can create 3D text inside After Effects, control timing with expressions (again), and track & rotoscope — but watch out for upcoming OS requirements, Disney, and assorted cheap tricks. Despite what some still think, you can make 3D text inside of After Effects without 3rd party plug-in by using the Cinema 4D renderer in comp preferences. You don’t have to pay extra. Greyscalegorilla showed how to do this several weeks ago in After Effects 3D Text Animation Tutorial NO PLUGINS!, and he’s back with an upgrade in Glossy 3D

After Effects News 2018 August #3

All the After Effects news that fits. Remember, the first tuts are free. Beware the Trump recession. Ryan Summers said recently: “It’s funny that all it took to get back that vaunted Mograph.net snark into the industry was for someone to announce Mograph.com.” I must have skimmed over the snark, but saw this from a founder, “FYI, we have no relation with mograph.com. As I understand it, the Brograph guys are rebranding as Mograph and have launched mograph.com, a community for motion designers…with the exact same name as this community…yeah.” Someday I may find

Recently there’s been a bit of a push to help people learn After Effects, though there’s fewer items being posted than about a year ago. Of course there’s more on learning, puberty, characters, time, and throttling. in addition to updates to Adobe’s After Effects Get Started tutorials, there’s new videos from Peter McKinnon on After Effects Basics and from Premiere Gal, Learn After Effects CC in 15 Minutes – Tutorial for Beginners:   In Mograph goes through puberty on Motionographer, School of Motion’s Joey Korenman explores his life in motion  design. Here’s another round of news on Adobe After Effects! It’s the millionth tutorial on 3D text, but it’s by Greyscalegorilla so you get best practices on the subject: After Effects 3D Text Animation Tutorial NO PLUGINS! This step-by-step tutorial focuses on lighting and materials using the Cinema 4D renderer inside AE, and includes the project file. It’s a change from the old classic using stacks of layers to create the illusion of 3D, How To Make 3D Text And Use 3D Stroke In After Effects (when AE’s UI was shockingly bright, though not quite as much as the ’90s).

Perhaps the biggest feature to hit After Effects in last 10 years or so is scripting (Adobe Help), seen especially in the growth and influence of AEscripts.com. Scripts extend AE in ways hardly imagined in the early days, but takes pressure off Adobe to refine features in updates. There are new tutorials, inspirations, updates, and releases coming from AEscripts.com every week, including a recent new version of Aep to Mogrt for AfterEffects. Also, coming July 25 is a new version of Stardust for After Effects with dynamic physics simulations, where particles and models can collide and

The media landscape for After Effects has passed its fourth or fifth extinction. We’re well beyond just forums, magazines, VHS tapes, authoritative and not-so-much books, DVD sets, plug-in vendor stars, and steaming video supersites. Much of the older channels and venues still exist of course, but there’s a sense that some newer voices are hidden in the noise of the social media information explosion. It’s best to start at the beginning, so if you’re often playing catchup, like me, Adobe has info on What’s New in After Effects, an overview of the latest release of AE and related Creative
