My friends over at RØDE
Microphones have put together this very good overview and behind-the-scenes of what they did to set up the recording of the boss' new car.
The tutorials and behind-the-scenes are pretty cool and informative… especially if you have to record any audio of cars for your film projects. Especially cool is the video below showing how to use the smartLav
and using your smartphone to record pretty darn good audio!
I like one of the comments on the first video on youtube…

Sekonic L-858 D Review
From Barry Andersson
I recently got my hands on the new Sekonic L-858 D light meter and I was excited to take it for a spin.
Before I go any further let me share with you that I started using Sekonic light meters a few decades ago. I got my first light meter when I bought an Arri S 16 mm film camera when I was 19 years old.
Here is the first unit I learned to how to actually use a light meter.
This model didn’t have a spot metering option nor did it

This isn't a new video, but the behind-the-scenes is new
There are lots of people that I've admired and Timur Civan
is one… and it has been a joy watching him bloom and grow as time goes on.
So who is Timur? Well, he is responsible for one of the most popular planet5D posts ever: What do you get when you put a 102 year old lens on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II
I hope you enjoy this little peek into how the video was made!
In case you haven't seen it, here's the original video:
shared this on his Facebook timeline the other day and I'm always fascinated by what goes on in manufacturing.
Maybe it has a lot to do with being able to walk the shop floor at Boeing here in St. Louis for years watching as the amazing F-15 and F-18 fighter planes are being built here.
It is amazing to see the amount of work that goes into building each camera in this video showing production in California.
Do you enjoy these kinds of videos as much as I do?

This is an interesting idea to combine both a Stereo & Mono Video Microphone into one unit… I'm wondering if my friends (and sponsor) at RØDE
are working on something like this. LOL I don't know.
But when I ran into this review, I thought it was intriguing enough to share with our readers.
Would you have a need for one? Do you carry both a stereo mic and a mono boom mic? I do sometimes.
Especially when I want some room ambiance or natural sounds, I want that stereo mic. What would you do?
giveaway ended on October 31 and we can finally announce the winners.

Approaching thunderstorms have always been exciting to me, it started as a young boy living in Florida where summer storms are almost a daily occurrence.
So frankly, I'm fascinated when I see these smashing good time lapses from people like Mike Olbinski because it takes me back to my childhood. Tho I don't ever remember being able to see scenes like these in Florida… even tho Florida is flat, they just didn't seem this dramatic. Maybe it was because I wasn't often out in the open like Mike was.
The other thing that Mike does really well with his final videos

This is something I'd never seen before but it was shared on CanonRumors
this morning and I was intrigued.
So if you look at the review I found (video below) there's plenty to like about this so you might want to pick one up
Sale is ONLY for a short time (last I looked only 38 hours remained).
One other thing (and I know many of you hate this idea…) but one other negative is there's no way to mount it vertically. So if you do FB Live streams, you'd have to have a tripod I guess that let's you mount the

Y'all know I'm a big fan of Vincent Laforet
The other day on Facebook, Vincent posted about being able to talk about an old commercial he shot for Apple – something for the iPad Pro launch – but they wouldn't let him (or anyone) talk about it or the production. Until now.
So I asked if it was OK to share here.
It is cool to be able to see much of what goes into an Apple promo piece. And when you think about the amount of work that Vincent and his team put in just for the background

Can computational photography bring still photographs spring to life? This BBC Video shows it being done and it is freaky cool. Or is it just freaky?
This is pretty amazing technology and something that could possibly change the future (or am I getting a bit carried away?). Imagine photos of your great-great grand parents suddenly moving.
Another very cool example of computational photography coming to fruition and a cool way to bring life to older images. Just have a look at the video and see what they did with Abraham Lincoln!
Filling in things like wrinkles and mouth interiors from

I know, you're shocked… I'm telling you that the answer to “Should I buy a new camera?” is no.
I can hear you now… “but planetMitch, you're writing a gear blog!”
But really, we're not JUST about gear (tho I have had a lot of people tell me that's all they think we write about).
The gear is part of the method to the madness.
And as you probably know, I follow the escapades of Simon Cade and not long ago I saw this video about how he's holding on to his older camera and still making great content. Continue reading "Should I Buy a New Camera? The Answer is Often NO"
This was sent in by one of our readers and I don't have any connection with this kickstarter, but I knew some of you would be interested in it.
Of course, the usual “kickstarter” warnings should be attached – you may never see your money again etc LOL.
One question for you experts… how did they eliminate the cable from showing in the shots were the camera was moving in the same direction as the cable is strung?
Also, am I the only one bothered by the statements like “it only took 3 minutes to set up”? Come on, it will

Here are the winners of the Novoflex NEX adapter giveaway we hosted back in September (yes, I know i'm behind!).
