Astounding Passion Project! Abraham Joffe’s ‘Ghosts of the Arctic’ is a Must See

Every time I get an email from Abraham Joffe, I open it immediately because I know I'm going to be impressed and his latest project ‘Ghosts of the Arctic' is an absolute must see. Normally, I post the video at the top, but I think you really should know the background before you watch as it makes it just that much more impressive. And frankly I'm not sure I could bear the kinds of temperatures they experienced in shooting this!

Photographer Joshua Holko: “The product of more than two years of planning Ghosts of the Arctic was filmed exclusively in the

Crop Sensors vs Full Frame :: Crop Or Crap? A very funny Zach Arias video

I admit I'm a full frame snob… but this video from Zach Arias is hilarious. And I totally understand his point – and I keep saying it over and over, it isn't about the gear, it is about the skills you have as a photographer or filmmaker! That being said, I love my full frame Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and I had a lot more success with my images after I switched from a crop sensor to a full frame… But buy the best camera you can afford and spend more money on lenses than bodies. And shoot as much as

Canon Switcher: “I Hate The Canon 6D Mark II – Goodbye, Canon”

Following up on the article I did last week on the decline of DSLR and Mirrorless sales, I wanted to get your thoughts on new cameras like the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. I've found plenty of videos like below… people complaining about the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and how Canon isn't listening to users… so they're switching. I guess it is much like the PC vs Mac discussions isn't it? The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Many of us are addicted to new gear. We love new technology and we now seem

Tornado Chasing – Capturing Tornados Close Up On A Week Long Chase

tornado chasing with ron rismanEver want to go Tornado Chasing? I do! I haven't managed to make the time or dig up the cash to make it happen, but it is on the bucket list! My friend Ron Risman managed to go on his second tornado chase this year and brought back some great footage. Ron submitted the following guest post (you can too!) A few weeks ago Ron Risman headed up a timelapse storm chasing adventure for alumni of his timelapse photography workshops (TimelapseWorkshops.com). The Adventure took them over 3500 miles in 7 days, and through eight different

Did You Know? Editor Paul Machliss Cut Baby Driver in Real Time!

Wow… I didn't know! Did you? So according to this article on Premium Beat, the movie was so complicated since it was based on the music, that the editor Paul Machliss basically created an edit suite on a cart so he could edit as they were shooting! Stunning. I still haven't seen the movie, but I really have to now! The article stems from a session at NAB 2017 where Machliss presented many different bits about his career. I think it is a MUST read for those of us in the industry. Just a tiny snippet from the article

DSLR Sales Down – Nobody Is Buying Stand Alone Cameras Any More!

dslr sales downDSLR sales were down in 2016 – but before you put on your “see mirrorless is taking over the world” hat, mirrorless sales were down too (tho they were less down than DSLR sales)! Yesterday, I was thinking about the new Light L16 I've been telling you about (and have a new site covering this incredible new technology called lightRumors) and they're about to start shipping the first production cameras this Friday, and I've been thinking a lot about the future of cameras. And so when I found this video by Mark over at The Photo/Video Show, it really hit home. People

4 Reasons Why You Need the Teradek Serv On Set

Teradek ServIt’s time we addressed the elephant in the room – the issue that is threatening to destroy the very integrity of on-set video production. Yes, I’m talking about the damn overcrowding in the video village! When everyone on set needs to see the shot, crowding around the director’s monitor can get pretty serious, especially when different departments need to make adjustments for their roles at the same time. This can be pretty limiting for the production; more people needing playbacks equals more time spent on set, and the last thing you need is to spend more time in acquisition than

The RED Hydrogen Smartphone? What the heck? A Deep Analysis

The RED Hydrogen smartphone is announced… Dust is settling after yesterday's crazy hyped up announcement of the RED Hydrogen Smartphone… so what is this thing? I'm sure many of you are wondering the same thing and even after the minimal information from the RED Hydrogen announcement there isn't much real data on what this is, but there are plenty of polarized opinions. So I thought I'd do a bit of digging and provide a curated cross section of what's out there on the web. Of course, the initial announcement: (beware it is a tiny ass 1 page piddly info PDF)

Unboxing a $50,000 8K Video Camera! Most People Don’t Shoot 4k, Do You Need 8k?

My friend Devin ‘SuperTramp' Graham published this unboxing of his new 8k video RED camera the other day and I had to laugh… 8k Video? Really? I know all about gear lust and suffer from it too… but 8k? Is there a business case for a $50,000 camera? For shooting youtube videos? I know a lot of you are major filmmakers and I understand the idea that filming in 8k will give you the flexibility to post cropped video at 4k, but I think for 99% of the public (which includes Devin), 8k is just pixelPeepingOverKill. Devin says he thinks 8k

The Greatest Rolling Shutter Demo EVER! Why Are Vertical Lines Crooked In My Video?

There are a lot of Rolling Shutter Demo videos around the web, but this one from SmarterEveryDay is #11 on the youtube trending list and I just had to share this with you this morning! There are lots of people who read planet5D and won't find this surprising, but I know there are plenty of noobs who still come here to find help and information about what's going on when they see something they're not familiar with – and the question like ‘why do vertical lines look crooked in my video' come in all the time. Even if you know about rolling

Two Camera Updates from Canon – The Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the Canon Rebel SL2

Canon just announced 2 updates that many people will want to pick up – the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the Canon Rebel SL2 (more on that in another post) The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is a very nice upgrade from the prior model and is the FIRST Canon Full Frame DSLR with an articulating screen! That's huge news. I think the only other full frame camera on the market with a ‘flippy' screen is the Sony A99 II (note the Pentax K-1 and the Nikon D750 have articulating screens, but they only move a little – they don't

What The HECK? Is RED Going To Build A Phone? What’s Coming July 6th?

red cell phone camera? With a few cryptic messages floating around the web, there's suspicion about what RED's CEO Jim Jannard is working on that he's teased on the forums: Of course, that just lights up the forums with speculation… what could it be? What's a credit card number I can use? He also said: And then there's the following message that I also found on Facebook:
And Dustin Farrell posted this morning on Facebook an image of what looks like a cell phone camera that was patented by RED? I've said for a LONG time (going back to my interview with Canon at Continue reading "What The HECK? Is RED Going To Build A Phone? What’s Coming July 6th?"
