The rumored 35mm F1.4 G Master lens is official.
Sony’s new FE 35mm F1.4 GM offers full-frame coverage and is designed for E-mount cameras. With a de-click aperture, it’s ideal for video and still shooters alike.
Optically, it is constructed with two XA (extreme aspherical) elements for edge-to-edge sharpness, while a separate ED (extra-low dispersion) element minimizes chromatic aberration. The 11-blade aperture will produce a near-circular bokeh. Its F1.4 maximum aperture is one of the fastest available.
For perspective, Sigma offers a 35mm F1. DG HSM (which is being updated), Tamron has a 35mm F2.8 DI III OSD, and Sony has it’s own FE 35mm F1.8.
The FE 35mm F1.4 GM is fully compatible with Sony’s fast autofocus system. Inside, it has two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors for precise AF and tracking that’s said to improve response and minimize vibration noise. The latter is important for those recording audio internally.
When focusing manually, the ring will tout a more immediate response, which is ideal when shooting video.
