It is all about story

Really.

The only thing in marketing, or filmmaking, or just about any business, that is important it seems to me is the story. I’m reminded of story this morning because I’ve just watched one of my hero’s short films.

Pablo Corona is a hero to me.

He tells stories… GREAT stories.

I met Pablo at NAB years ago and had a chance to enjoy a good conversation. He’s rooted. He’s a story kind of guy.

He created stories from his heart about his town. He is helping Rockford Illinois build itself by telling stories about the people of Rockford.

Rant: why so much camera hate?

Was reading the comments on this canonrumors post about the possibility of a new Canon mirrorless with 70mp sensor.

Carl: Canon can’t get 30 or 52 MP right, so how would they get 70 MP right?

Nick: I get that it uses the same sensor. The same sensor that is about 3 years old at this point.

Theo: nobody really needs 70mp in full frame!

And of course there’s sony plugs (as if Sony is the only camera brand on the planet now).

Brian: But Sony cameras have 200MP, 700 fps, 16K video and 9 card slots!

And yes, I Continue reading “Rant: why so much camera hate?”

Free Soloing El Capitan – A bit about how they filmed it

This is fun!

I suspect that many of you have seen the previews for “Free Solo” or maybe you’ve seen the movie?

I haven’t yet seen it but i’m fascinated by the story.

And of course, as a filmmaker, I wanted to know more about the “how” side of making the film.

While this isn’t the whole story, it is a fascinating piece to hear more about how the crew documented this incredible feat.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the directors of the documentary “Free Solo,” discuss how they captured rock climber Alex Honnold’s free solo climb (without any ropes, Continue reading “Free Soloing El Capitan – A bit about how they filmed it”

Boycott the Oscars

Boycott the Oscars?

There’s been some chatter (depending on whom you watch/read) about the “Academy” deciding to award 4 categories during the commercial times.

I’m pretty shocked they would decide that Cinematography, Film Editing, Makeup and Hair Styling, and Live Action Short would be able to be done off camera.

They did say these 4 categories would be ‘rotated’ with other categories every year… but it seems pretty lame to me.

And so is Jem Scofield:

What do you think?

I can’t say i’m boycotting because frankly I haven’t watched in years ?

Canon EOS RP – Curated Coverage

Canon updates their new mirrorless line with the Canon EOS RP and several new lenses.

This is a pretty serious camera tho of course the usual trolls and specFanatics are doing their usual “it ain’t as good as the…” moaning online.

Let me just say this for the millionth time… if the specs don’t float your boat, then this camera is NOT FOR YOU because you’re not the target market. So move on!

It has most of the features of the Canon EOS R and has the flippyDippy screen which I love, plus it has a microphone and headphone jack (which used Continue reading “Canon EOS RP – Curated Coverage”

How’d Kubrick do 2001?

I remember seeing Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 in a theater when it was released.

I don’t remember much really, but I do recall being confused.

Maybe because I was 11 HA!

It has always been fascinating of course and when I stumbled into this analysis of some of the technology used to create such a science fiction masterpiece more than 50 years ago, I had to tune in.

I hope it serves you as well.

Part 2

Description of part 1Ever wonder how Kubrick made his sci-fi masterpiece, 2OO1: A Space Odyssey? In Part 1, we take an in-depth look into the production of ‘The Dawn of Man’ Continue reading “How’d Kubrick do 2001?”

Epic Rolling Shutter Takedown

I love this guy… I’ve always thought that people worried too much about rolling shutter, but Carlos Quintero really takes down the whole argument (at least I think so LOL)…

For me, it all comes back to story… all of this bitching and moaning about finding the perfect camera that has zero “defects” is just malarky.

Tell a great story and nobody cares if there’s a bit of rolling shutter etc.

Do you really think that rolling shutter ruins your video? If so, stop doing whip pans!

How good are your ears?

I stumbled into this video by Rick Beato about your ears and what you can hear.

As a 61 year old guy, I’ve always been curious about how poor my hearing has gotten.

I’ve also been wondering for decades (ok, have they been around for decades? LOL) whether mp3 files really compressed too much data out of the audio recordings and whether I was really missing something with my massive collection of music that I’ve switched from seriously big files down to mp3s to save space.

After taking the NPR test mentioned… I’m very satisfied with learning that I can’t tell the difference.

Our good friend Hugh Brownstone started a series of video interviews some months back. This was the first episode.

It goes to show (like Hugh said in the description), it is about the content.

Sometimes we get really wrapped up in gear (shocking I know!), but this is a good reminder to get off your butt and produce good content.

The STORY is king and this is a fascinating look at a really cool story.

Choices make us (and sometimes break us – but again it is about whether you choose to let that keep you down or not).

We’re defined by our choices.

Often choices are very very hard.

Often they’re very easy – but then they make profound movement in your life.

We make millions of choices every day.

Dan Carr is on my friend list but I did not know until I chose to watch this video, how he became a fantastic photographer.

This is a fantastic video about Dan and I hope you take 5 minutes out of your day to watch. I Continue reading “What Would Be Your Choice?”

33 Eye-Opening Drone Stats

There was a controversy in our neighborhood because a woman swears her surveillance camera caught a drone outside her window at 3 am “peeping” on her. Nobody with any sense believed it was a drone, but alas, some people love conspiracies.

But heck it was so dramatic and emotion driven, it even spread around the US and appeared on plenty of sites and local news media because of the shock factor.

Most of us knew it wasn’t a drone, at least those who have any experience with cameras.

Heck it was so obvious because the ‘thing’ shown in the video

Canon Adding 5 Axis IBIS?

Canonrumors has recently posted several very interesting patents and rumors… the first being that 5 Axis IBIS is coming to Canon cameras.

One of the biggest features missing from the first Canon EOS R for a lot of people is in-body image stabilization. Canon has always been a company that has said in-lens stabilization is their preferred way of doing things, as they have made claims that it’s better than sensor based stabilization.

We’re being told by a pretty good source that Canon will introduce 5 axis IBIS (in-body image stabilization) in the next EOS R series camera.

Heck, I’ve Continue reading “Canon Adding 5 Axis IBIS?”

What Are YOU Doing?

I subscribe to several newsletters that I try to read every time they hit my inbox.

This morning, in the EntrepreneurHQ newsletter, there was this quote:

The famous slow motion running in the TV show Baywatch was used because the show didn’t have enough money to shoot whole episodes so to fill the hour they started filming the actors running in slow motion.” Find creative ways to save money!

And that inspired me… not to save money, but to think about how creativity and invention can change my (and your) fortune.

Did the slowmo in Baywatch make the Continue reading “What Are YOU Doing?”

Crazy Must See Drone Flight! In, Around, Over, Under a TRAIN!

With all the crazyiness in the world, this seems to be just the thing to go with it… this guy does some crazy drone flying around a moving train – including over, under, around, thru, and even inside an empty car. The funny thing is when the pilot hovers near the window of the train conductor!

The gentleman flying this drone sure knows what he’s doing. I wonder if he’s doing drone racing? He sure has the skills for it.

And no, this really has nothing to do with filmmaking or photography or really gear (tho he does list all Continue reading “Crazy Must See Drone Flight! In, Around, Over, Under a TRAIN!”
